What is Athlete's Foot?

Athlete's foot, also known as tinea pedis, is a common fungal infection of the feet. It is caused by a fungus that thrives in warm, moist environments. Athlete's foot is most common in people who have sweaty feet, such as athletes, dancers, and manual laborers. However, anyone can get athlete's foot.

The most common symptom of athlete's foot is itching between the toes. The skin between the toes may also become red, scaly, and cracked. In some cases, athlete's foot can cause a more severe rash that may be painful and blistered.

Causes

Athlete's foot is caused by a fungus that lives on dead skin cells. The fungus can spread through contact with contaminated surfaces, such as shower floors, locker room benches, and swimming pool decks. Athlete's foot can also be spread from person to person through direct contact.

Treatment

Athlete's foot can be treated with over-the-counter antifungal creams or ointments. More severe cases of athlete's foot may require prescription medication. In addition to medication, it is important to keep the feet clean and dry. This can be done by wearing moisture-wicking socks, wearing dry shoegear, washing the feet with soap and water daily, and drying the feet thoroughly after washing.

Prevention

The best way to prevent athlete's foot is to keep the feet clean and dry. You can also help prevent athlete's foot by:
